1. Introduction

What is Photo No-No!

Photo No-No! is a software program that runs unobtrusively in the background on your computer while you or a family member accesses the Internet.

Photo No-No! is designed to protect your children from pornographic images on the Internet. It blocks pornographic photographs and other images as they enter your computer. Every entering image is processed, using image analysis for possible pornographic content by using Artificial Intelligence or AI.

Using Artificial Intelligence, or AI, Photo No-No! “knows” the difference between good and bad photos.

It does not depend on subscription services striving to keep up with ever changing Adult Image web sites. Photo No-No! works strictly from images entering your computer from the Internet. You don't need to constantly update lists of objectionable sites since it uses AI image analysis.

Why Use Photo No-No!

Most Parental Controls software work by blocking access to web sites that the software makers consider objectionable. They do this in three ways:

•    The software contains a list of web site addresses that the software makers consider objectionable. Your web browser cannot access these sites.

•    The software looks for web sites that have voluntarily listed themselves as pornographic. It blocks these sites also.

•    The software contains a list of words that the software makers consider objectionable. The software will block individual words on web sites that are on its list.

The limitations are obvious. Web sites come go and change names everyday. And, few care if children are exposed to the content on their web sites, despite content warnings on their web pages.

Thus, parents using such Parental Controls are required to use such software as a Subscription Service, so that the software makers can continually update the various lists of blocks in the software.

Unfortunately, there will always be pornographic sites that the software hasn’t yet added to its list.

Using Artificial Intelligence, or AI, Photo No-No! “knows” the difference between good and bad photos.

Photo No-No! does not depend on subscription services striving to keep up with ever changing Adult Image web sites. Photo No-No! works strictly from images entering your computer from the Internet. You don't need to constantly update lists of objectionable sites.

Photo No-No! works great with other Parental Controls, both with those built into your Internet browser and with those programs that block words and web sites.

How does Photo No-No!  work?

Photo No-No! blocks pornographic photographs and other images as they enter your computer by working as a proxy server between your browser and the Internet.

Instead of just blocking a list of pornographic words or specific web sites, Photo No-No! processes every entering image, using image analysis for possible pornographic content. For those without other Parental Controls, you can also manually block entire web sites based on their site name. However, the main task of Photo No-No! is to filter out Adult Images automatically.

Photo No-No! is based on Artificial Intelligence. It has been trained millions of times to learn the difference between “good” images and pornographic, or “bad” images using the ERG Artificial Intelligence Image Analysis Engine (United States Patent 7,403,929 and Patents Pending). It works on a sliding scale, depending on your own fam ily values.

How accurate is Photo No-No!

Generally, Photo No-No! is far more accurate than other Parental Control software. Photo No-No! examines images on every web page entering your computer, not just those on an out of date list.

However, like we all do, any intelligence makes mistakes. At its default setting, Photo No-No! will correctly block the pornographic, or “bad” images almost all of the time while letting ”good” images through almost all the time.

At its default setting of Level 5, Photo No-No! blocks “bad” images nearly 85% of the time, while letting “good” images through nearly 95% of the time. The settings can be adjusted according to your preferences.

What are the different levels?

Photo No-No! works on a sliding scale of settings that the Parent can adjust based on family preferences. You can expect the following performance at default image selections:

Level    Good Accuracy    Bad Accuracy
10                None                          All              All Images Blocked
9                   75%                           98%
8                   80%                           97%
7                   85%                           95%
6                   90%                           90%           Equal Accuracy
5                   95%                           85%           Default Level
4                   96%                           75%
3                   97%                           65%
2                   98%                           50%
1                   99%                           30%
0                    All                            None          No Images Blocked

Clearing Cache Automatically

The cache on your computer stores a number of web pages you have recently visited. With this feature, a return visit to a web site loads much more quickly. Only changes to the web page from your last visit will appear. Thus, if you changed Photo No-No! settings, a return visit to a site may or may not reveal changes to the page your new settings would have displayed.

A simple way around this is to simply hit your browser’s “refresh” button, and the web page is reloaded from the web site. However, it is recommended that you make such update automatic every time you change Photo No-No! settings or have used Parental Timeout.

Otherwise, there’s a possibility that objectionable images remain in your cache when your children return to the computer.

To make cache clearing automatic, open the “Options” tab from the menu, and check the box under “Cache Options”. You may also click a button to clear all cached web pages currently stored.

External Proxy Server

Photo No-No! supports proxy chaining.

When you are already running a proxy server and need Photo No-No! to connect to your proxy server to reach the Internet, you can easily setup Photo No-No! to connect to external proxy servers.

Simply go to the Options tab in Photo No-No!’s main window.  Click the button titled ‘External Proxy Chain Settings’.  Click ‘Use External Proxy’.  Then put in the server name of your existin g proxy server and the port number.

If you already had your external proxy server for http setup before installing Photo No-No! and you are using Internet Explorer, then Photo No-No! will automatically setup your external proxy settings and save them.

Running Minimized

Photo No-No! installs in its default mode. A Parent can change a number of settings, including the appearance of Photo No-No!">

Minimize on Start

In default mode, when starting or re-booting your computer Photo No-No! opens the Password access screen automatically after the program loads. This is helpful for first time users, or for those who change settings for their children frequently. To skip the screen, open the “Options” and check “Minimize Photo No-No! On Start.”

Hide Splash Screen On Start

In default mode, when starting or re-booting your computer Photo No-No! displays a Splash screen on your monitor while the program loads. A Parent can turn off this display from the “Options” tab, checking “Hide Splash Screen On Start”. This is not recommended.

The Splash screen acts a reminder that the program is loading. Opening another application while the program loads may occasionally interrupt the ability to access Photo No-No! settings during this computer session. Photo No-No! will, however, perform its analysis function, blocking objectionable images and any sites on the blocked sites list.

Use a Blank Image For Blocked Images

A blank image (the web page background) can be selected instead of the Photo No-No! icon for blocking bad images. With this selection a blocked image is unobtrusive, it’s simply not there. All other functions, including the blocked images Activity Log, continue their work. A Parent can select this option from the “Options” tab, checking “Use a Blank Image”.

A Parent may also hide Photo No-No! and its icon from the task tray and tool bar. See appropriate Help Tutorial sections for details.

Hide From System Tray

This option removes the Photo No-No! camera icon with a red x from the system tray when running.  To open Photo No-No! when it is running hidden, you can simply select Photo No-No! from the Start -> Programs -> Photo No-No menu and it will bring up the already running copy of Photo No-No!.

The “system tray” is the box at the bottom right hand corner of your screen, usually with the time and various system icons.  Photo No-No! places an icon there for you to easily click on, enter a password, and change settings.  Sometimes it is necessary to hide Photo No-No! so that computer users need not know that it is running at all.  This can be accomplished by selecting the “Remove Icon From System Tray When Running”.

Hide When Minimized

The “Remove From Taskbar When Minimized” option hides Photo No-No! from the taskbar when you minimize or click the x in the upper right hand corner of Photo No-No!  It is there so that Photo No-No! can run in the background and not take up valuable space on your taskbar.

3. Levels and Image Types

Description

Photo No-No! allows the Parent to adjust Photo No-No! settings based on family preferences. Both Internet Security options and Scan Image Files Security options can be adjusted.

There are two types of settings that work together:

•    Level Settings – There is a sliding scale for selecting Level preferences. At Level “0” no images are blocked. At Level “10” all images are blocked. At its default setting of Level 5, Photo No-No! blocks “bad” images almost all of the time, while letting “good” images through almost all of the time.

•    Image Types – Photo No-No! can examine various types of images for pornographic content. At its default setting, Photo No-No! analyzes only the most common image types, thus speeding display of the web page.

Level Settings

Photo No-No! provides a sliding scale for selecting Level preferences. At Level “0” no images are blocked. At Level “10” all images are blocked. At its default setting of Level 5, Photo No-No! blocks “bad” images nearly 85% of the time, while letting “good” images through nearly 95% of the time. You can expect the following performance at the default image selections:

The Parent may wish to adjust to a higher Level, for perhaps very young children, or to a lower Level for older children.

Supported Image Types

Photo No-No! can examine 15 classifications of image types, covering over 30 actual image formats. Most pornographic images are photographs, which generally are presented on a web site in only one of a few image types. At its default setting, Photo No-No! analyzes only the most common image types for pornography, thus speeding display of the web page.

The Parent may wish to increase the number of image types examined, or lower the number depending on preferences. You may also select to analyze all image types entering your computer, or to examine zip file contents for images.

Some of the image types are listed below:

•    GIF
•    JPEG
•    TIFF
•    Portable Network Graphics
•    PICT
•    Photoshop
•    Microsoft Windows Bitmap, BMP
•    Targa
•    Icon
•    Cursor
•    Sun Raster
•    X11 Bit Map
•    X11 Pixel Map
•    PCX
•    DCX
•    And many more

6. Clearing Cache Automatically

Cache Clearing Options

7. Parental Timeout

Using Parental Timeout

Parental Timeout is a convenient feature for Parents who want to temporarily turn off Photo No-No! while they visit web sites. By selecting a period of time, Photo No-No! is set to Level “0” (off) for that period. When the time is up, your previously selected security Level is reset.

Using the timeout feature avoids your possibly forgetting to reset Photo No-No!, or from having to make changes to your preferred settings.

The Parental Timeout feature can be set for any amount of time up to 4 hours. For easiest use, drag or use the arrow keys.

8. Turn Off / Turn On

Enable or Disable Photo No-No!

At default, Photo No-No! starts automatically when you start your computer and resides unobtrusively in the background.

A Parent can Turn Off (disable) Photo No-No! in one of several ways:

•    Use the Parental Timeout option to disable the Photo No-No! analysis functions for up to 4 hours.

•    For longer periods, a Parent can select “Internet” from the Photo No-No! menu and click “Turn Off”.

•    Another method is to select “File” from the menu and then click “Exit”.

For your protection, each of the above options only disables Photo No-No! for the time selected or until the computer is re-booted (restarted). Photo No-No! then returns to work at the settings previously selected.

To completely Turn Off Photo No-No!, even after a re-start of the computer, do the following:

1.    Select “Internet” from the menu. Click “Turn Off”.
2.    Select “File” from the menu, click “Save Settings”, and then click “Exit.”
3.    Photo No-No! is Turned Off until a Parent turns it back on.

To restart Photo No-No! after the above action, select “Internet” from the menu, and then click “Restart Photo No-No!”. The software returns to work at the last settings selected.

9. Directory Scan

 (s) from the hard drive completely.
Scanning a Drive or Directory

A Parent is encouraged to periodically File Scan computer drives to observe the types of images being saved by the children. A File Scan can be for an entire Drive, or limited to specifically questionable directories and folders.

Scans are at the current File Scan Level, and for the current Image types that you have established. Possible suspect images are listed in the Log, including those found in “hidden” files and folders.  The File Scan can also examine zip contents if selected.

To access the File Scan features, click the “File Scan” option at the top of the Photo No-No! menu, then “Start Scan”. The options selection can also be accessed by clicking the “File Scan” tab.

To view a suspect image, highlight an image file and either double-click it or select “View”. The image may then be Cleared or Deleted.

Clearing an image or multiple images simply removes the image(s) from the displayed list.  Deleting an image or multiple images removes the image(s) from the hard drive completely.

"Clear All" from the main menu will clear all of the files in the found list.

10. Auto Scan Hard Drive

Setup Auto Scan

The Parent can use this feature to periodically scan your C:\ hard drive for objectionable images. Images questioned are stored in the Log until you can review them.

Auto Scan can be set to perform its analysis daily, weekly, or monthly, on a particular day and at a particular time. File Scans are at the current File Scan Level, and for the current Image types that you have established.

Note: Depending on the size of your hard drive, your settings, and on the number of files to be examined, this process can be lengthy. Schedule it for a convenient time when your computer is not normally in use.

The Parent may also select to perform Auto Scan on start-up. However, the analysis time can be lengthy as noted above.

To access the Auto Scan features, click the “File Scan” option at the top of the Photo No-No! menu, then “Auto Scan”. The options selection can also be access by clicking the “Timeout” tab.

11. Good Sites

Good Sites Feature

The “Good Sites” feature allows you to enter sites that are good, so that they will not have any blocked images no matter what the level setting.

There are many reasons to add good sites:

•    Suppose your children are viewing an educational, news, or other good site that has no bad content and they are receiving blocked images.

•    You are viewing sites that have good content and are loading slow since each image on them is being examined.

•    You are seeing blocked images on good content, but maybe it’s ordering underwear, viewing bathing suites, etc.

•    Your company website maintains only good images and there is no reason to scan corporate images every time.

•    Etc.

Be careful on adding good sites

For instance, a user’s web page on a hosting site might contain “bad” images, or if an image off subdomain.exampledomain.com is good, don’t add domain.com to the Good Site List unless you know that every image on domain.com is actually a good image!

To add a good site, simply select the “Good Sites” tab or “Good” from the menu bar.  Then click “Add Site”.

Here you must enter a domain, not a URL.  All the images from that site domain or sub-domain will be marked as good and not scanned.

For instance, suppose you want to allow all the images on your company site companysite.com.  Simply add site, companysite.com.  This will allow all images from www.companysite.com, from site1.companysite.com, etc.

You can also enter a sub-domain site such as goodsite.siteabc.com.  Images from www.siteabc.com will still be scanned, while images from goodsite.siteabc.com will not.

The Good Site List can be exported and imported to share with friends, associates, etc.

12. Site Blocking

m) doesn’t block other content on domain.com but just content comin
Blocked Sites Feature

The primary purpose of Photo No-No! is to analyze images for pornographic content. As an added feature, however, the Parent may also block specific web sites from any access at all. There are a number of reasons for doing so:

•    The Activity Log may indicate that numerous images are being blocked at a web site. Generally, this is indicative of a possible pornographic site. Blocking the site prevents any possible exposure to images.

•    A Parent may wish to block other types of objectionable web sites. Known pornographic web sites, gambling sites, dirty jokes sites, etc. may all be blocked.

•    Some web sites may be too personal, or perhaps too mature for a child to visit. Examples could include a financial web site that has been configured for automatic password acceptance, or perhaps a medical site that offers detail explanation of a health problem.

To Add a blocked site, access the appropriate Photo No-No! menu item and click “Add Site”. Type or copy the site name into the space provided and click “Add”.

A site can be a site domain to block such as blockedsite.com, a sub-domain such as blockedsub.domain.com or a specific URL such as http://www.site.com/blockedurl.html.

If you block a domain, then all sub-domains on that domain will be blocked as well.  Blocking a sub-domain (such as blockedsub.domain.com) doesn’t block other content on domain.com but just content coming from blockedsub.domain.com or any sub-domains on it (such as blocked1.blockedsub.domain.com).

Make sure a blocked site or URL is not a domain in the good list or it will not be blocked!

To Remove a blocked site from the list, highlight the name of the web site and click “Remove Site”. As a pre-caution this removes the blocked site for the current computer session only. To permanently remove the site from the list, first remove the site, then access the “File” menu and click “Save Settings”.

A Parent may remove all blocked sites at once by accessing the “Block” option from the menu, then click “remove All Sites”.

A Parent may Export a listing of selected sites names, perhaps to a word processor for saving or printing.  Similarly, a listing of site names may be Imported to quickly establish a group of blocked sites.  The Blocked Site List may be exported or imported to share with friends, associates, etc.

13. Logging

Activity Log Feature

While Photo No-No! is running, every image that was blocked, and every web site on the blocked sites list that has had attempted access, are recorded in the Activity Log.

Parents are encouraged to review this Log frequently to see the activity of their children.

•    Images that have been extensively blocked at a web site may encourage you to add that site to your blocked sites list.

•    Numerous blocked site access attempts may indicate that your children are trying to circumvent Photo No-No! features.

The Parent can Export the Log, perhaps to a word processor for saving or printing. The Parent may also clear the Log (reset) once current listings are reviewed.

15. Troubleshooting

Password Entry

Problem: Photo No-No! is working, but it won't let me enter my Password (or anything) into the Password box on the pop-up screen.

Possible Cause: You may have accessed an application before Photo No-No!  finished its initial loading.

Solution: Re-boot your computer and wait for Photo No-No!  to load before accessing an application.

Unblocking Images

Problem: There's a "good" web site I visit that receives quite a number of image blocks. What can I do?

Possible Cause: The web site may be trying to import the image from a currently blocked site, or there may be something about each particular image itself that Photo No-No! considers questionable.

Solution: To temporarily view a site with blocked images, the best way is for the Parent to set a short Parental Timeout and then re-fresh the page to view it. A more permanent solution is to lower the Internet Level and/or accept more Image Types without scan.(Not
recommended).

If the site is suitable for your children, add the site to the "Good Sites" list. See instructions above.

Blocking More Images

Problem: I occasionally see an objectionable image that Photo No-No! should have blocked. What can I do?

Possible Cause: At its default setting, Photo No-No! has been designed to block pornographic or “bad” images almost all of the time, while letting “good” images through all most all the time. Of course, defining the difference between good and bad images is somewhat subjective, and depends on personal preferences. One man’s hill is another one’s mountain. That’s why Photo No-No! settings can be adjusted to fit your personal preferences.

Solution: First, we suggest you open the Photo No-No! menu, select “Internet” from the top of the  menu, then click “Test Photo No-No!”. This will confirm whether the software is running. If it isn’t, click to “Restart”.

If instead the software is already running, right-click the objectionable image on the web page, then “Properties” to view the file extension of the image name. Generally this will be three letters such as “jpg” or “gif”. Return to the Photo No-No! menu and click on the tab “Internet Level” to see if that Image Type extension is “checked” for analysis by the software. If not, put a check by the extension type. When the current web page is refreshed, and when other web pages are now viewed, that Image Type will now be analyzed by Photo No-No! for pornographic content.

If the Image Type is already checked, the next option is to raise the Level filtering. We suggest you try this increase one level at a time, refreshing the web page after each trial, until you are comfortable with the results. (Note: Increasing accuracy in identification of “bad” images slowly decreases accuracy in identification of “good” images. At its highest setting of Level 10 the software will block all checked Image Types).

Instead, if after a few adjustments with Level and Image Type settings you don’t achieve a satisfactory balance between good and bad accuracy, we recommend you Block the web site. (See the Help Tutorial section on Blocking Sites).

Cache Location Entry Problem or Error

Problem: The cache location cannot be typed in directly to the text box or I cannot select the directory I want from the directory chooser window for “Set Cache Location”.  What can I do?

Possible Cause: The cause is that we don’t want you to be able to type in a directory that doesn’t exist, or possibly wipe your hard drive clear on a cache change, so you can’t type it into the box by design.  If you can’t select the directory you want, make sure you don’t browse into that directory.  Instead, make sure you are in the directory above, highlight the directory you want, then hit set cache location.

Solution: If you are in the directory you want and select “Set Cache Location” and nothing happens, go up one
dire not lost.

Blocked Site Problem or Error

Problem: I put a site in the Blocked Site List, but it isn’t showing up as blocked, the actual page is still displayed.

Possible Causes and Solutions:

1.    Your browser is caching the page.  Clear your browser cache and try again.  You can clear your cache from either your browser or if you have set up your cache location in Photo No-No!, you can select Options then hit the “Clear Cache” button.

2.    The site or URL you are trying to block is actually in the Good Sites list too.  Simply remove it from the Good Sites list or find a difference in the domain or extension to add to each list.

3.    There is an error in your blocked site entry in the Blocked Site List.  To check make sure that the URL you are trying to access is:
            1.    listed in the Blocked Site List directly
            2.    the URL has the exact same domain as a domain in the Blocked Site List
            3.    the URL is a sub-domain of an entry in the blocked site list (example: sub1.blockedsite.com when blockedsite.com should be in the Blocked Site List and not sub2.blockedsite.com)

Good Site Still Has Blocked Images

Problem: I put a site in the Good Site List, but it still has blocked images.  What can I do?

Possible Causes and Solutions:

1.    Your browser is caching the page.  Clear your browser cache and try again.  You can clear your cache from either your browser or if you have set up your cache location in Photo No-No!, y
ou can select Options then hit the “Clear Cache” button.

2.    The image is actually loaded off a different site than from the page being viewed.  Suppose you are viewing a page http://www.examplesite.com/index.html and images are being blocked that you do not want blocked.  You add examplesite.com to the Good Site List, but there are still blocked images after clearing the cache.  Check the Photo No-No! log to see where the images are actually coming from.  Many times sites will host images elsewhere or import them from other sites.  In this example an image that was blocked on the site might actually be coming from examplesite2.com.  So you could then add this examplesite2.com site to the Good Site List.  Be careful however in that the site you add to the Good Site List doesn’t contain any “bad” images on it!  For instance a user’s web page on a hosting site might contain “bad” images!

3.    The domain is incorrect.  Make sure that you put the correct domain for the good site.  If it is coming from subdomain.domain.com don’t just add domain.com but add subdomain.domain.com unless you know that every image on domain.com is actually a good image!

Browser Problems

Problem: My web browser is loading pages slowly or not at all.  What’s wrong?

Possible Causes and Solutions:

1.    Your computer is running low on disk space.  When your computer is running low on disk space, many strange things can happen with your operating system.  We suggest you have at least 150 Megabytes of free disk space at all times.  To free up disk space choose:  Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup

2.    Your browser is using HTTP 1.1 or greater through the Photo No-No! proxy.  Currently, Photo No-No! requires you to use HTTP 1.0 through the proxy.  If your using Internet Explorer:
          a.    In Internet Explorer go to Tools -> Internet Options
          b.    Choose the Advance tab.
          c.    Find section ‘HTTP 1.1’
          d.    Unselect ‘Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.’
          e.    Click Ok to close all windows.

Many other things could be happening such as a slow Internet connection, etc.  It is best to free up disk space, clear your caches, and reboot your computer.
